 1-3                                  In Memory
 1-4                                     of
 1-5                             John J. Santos, Jr.
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas and the citizens of
 1-7     San Antonio were deeply saddened by the loss of John J. Santos, Jr.,
 1-8     who died December 5, 1998, at the age of 81; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, This venerable member of the community was a man
1-10     with a song in his heart and a great love for family and friends;
1-11     and
1-12           WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Mr. Santos graduated
1-13     from Fox Tech High School in 1936 and was a member of the All-City
1-14     championship basketball team; he later enlisted in the Army to
1-15     serve his country during World War II; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Upon returning from the war, Mr. Santos became
1-17     one of the first Mexican Americans to achieve the rank of postal
1-18     executive and remained there for 30 years; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Having to always be involved in something,
 2-1     Mr. Santos started devoting his time to real estate, and this
 2-2     endeavor led him to serve on the Bexar County Appraisal Review
 2-3     Board; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Affectionately named the "Broadway Gondolier," this
 2-5     accomplished singer and guitar player was fond of singing and
 2-6     performing for family and friends; he wrote numerous compositions
 2-7     including a tribute to his wife of 47 years, Lucille, entitled
 2-8     "Si Yo Pudiera"; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, John J. Santos, Jr., was a devoted husband, father,
2-10     and brother; he was a man who constantly challenged his sons to be
2-11     all that they could be and more:  John Phillip Santos was the first
2-12     Hispanic Rhodes Scholar and is now a writer and television producer
2-13     for the Ford Foundation; George Santos is a psychiatrist and medical
2-14     director in Houston; Charles Santos is a producer for Broadway Cares
2-15     in New York City; and
2-16           WHEREAS, Known for his compassion and gentleness, Mr. Santos
2-17     leaves his family and friends memories that will be forever
2-18     treasured; now, therefore, be it
2-19           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-21     bereaved family of John J. Santos, Jr.:  his wife, Lucille; his
2-22     sons, John Phillip, George, and Charles; his brother, Roger; and
2-23     his sisters, Connie, Bea, and Margie; and, be it further
2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 3-1     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
 3-2     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
 3-3     do so in memory of John J. Santos, Jr.
