 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 961
 1-3           WHEREAS, On May 15, 1999, the citizens of the
 1-4     City of Shoreacres, near Houston, is celebrating the city's 50th
 1-5     anniversary; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Shoreacres is a coastal community that began as a
 1-7     playground for Houston's elite in 1925; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Living in Shoreacres was touted as a way to
 1-9     have a country club home of one's own; in 1927, a six-acre site
1-10     was donated to the Houston Yacht Club, which built a pink stucco
1-11     clubhouse there; today, the yacht club is the only commercial
1-12     establishment in the city; and
1-13           WHEREAS, In 1949, the residents voted to incorporate as a
1-14     municipality, and since that time the city has operated as a general
1-15     law city with an elected city council and a mayor with a two-year
1-16     term; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Priding itself on its commitment to the environment
1-18     since its incorporation, the City of Shoreacres is designated
1-19     as a bird sanctuary, and many of its residents are active in the
1-20     Gulf Coast Conservation Association; the preservation of the city's
1-21     shoreline, which includes the longest public waterfront parkground
1-22     in the state, is a constant goal; and
1-23           WHEREAS, The city boasts a long history of volunteerism;
1-24     the Shoreacres Volunteer Fire Department was staffed with unpaid
 2-1     citizens who fought fires and often raised their own funds to supply
 2-2     the town with new equipment; fundraising events were community
 2-3     activities such as spaghetti and chili dinners at the City Park or
 2-4     City Hall; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, The City of Shoreacres has maintained an excellent
 2-6     quality of life for its citizens in a small-town atmosphere, an
 2-7     accomplishment worthy of legislative recognition; now, therefore,
 2-8     be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-10     76th Legislature, hereby congratulate the City of Shoreacres on
2-11     the festive occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it further
2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
2-13     expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate.
