1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 984 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize Gertrude Miller for her selection as the recipient of 1-4 a Women of Spirit Award by the American Jewish Congress Southwest 1-5 Region's Commission for Women's Equality; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Founded more than 80 years ago, the American 1-7 Jewish Congress is a national organization in the forefront of the 1-8 struggle for social and economic justice, religious freedom, and 1-9 human rights; its Women of Spirit Awards are presented to women 1-10 who have been diligent in the pursuit of social justice and who 1-11 have contributed significantly to the quality of life for all of 1-12 us; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Gertrude Miller is a longtime advocate for social 1-14 justice and has worked for women's rights and equality since the 1-15 early eighties; she is a cofounder of the Jewish Coalition Against 1-16 Domestic Violence and was the first chair of the Family Violence 1-17 Interfaith Committee of the Elder Abuse Coalition; and 1-18 WHEREAS, A well-known humanitarian and community leader, 1-19 Mrs. Miller has been active in a wide array of causes that stem 1-20 from such issues as peace, the environment, nonviolence, hunger, 1-21 overpopulation, interfaith activities, and the plight of Soviet 1-22 Jewry; and 2-1 WHEREAS, An exceptionally talented individual who pursues 2-2 many interests, Mrs. Miller is a dedicated and effective worker 2-3 whose concern for others is legendary, and the American Jewish 2-4 Congress has awarded her its lifetime achievement award, 2-5 proclaiming her volunteer extraordinaire; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-7 76th Legislature, hereby commend Gertrude Miller for her many 2-8 accomplishments and her dedication to her work in human rights 2-9 and social justice; and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her 2-11 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-12 West 2-13 ______________________________________ 2-14 President of the Senate 2-15 I hereby certify that the above 2-16 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-17 on May 13, 1999. 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 Secretary of the Senate 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Member, Texas Senate
