1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 995 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to pay 1-4 tribute to Angela Scovazzo Borchers for her many contributions 1-5 to the citizens of Laredo and the State of Texas; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Born on August 22, 1910, in Los Angeles, California, 1-7 she is the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Charles Scovazzo; her 1-8 parents died when she was 10 years old, and she moved to Galveston 1-9 to be raised by her aunt, Mrs. F. Guisti; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Attending Ursuline Academy in Galveston until her 1-11 sophomore year, she then went to Ball High School and graduated 1-12 in 1927; this talented young woman earned her bachelor's degree 1-13 at Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, majoring in 1-14 mathematics and minoring in economics; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Angela Scovazzo married Elmore Herman Borchers 1-16 and they lived in Laredo from 1934 until his death in 1990; 1-17 they were blessed with four children: Mrs. George E. Powell, 1-18 Dr. E. H. Borchers, Jr., Charles R. Borchers, who predeceased 1-19 his parents in 1997, and Ralph L. Borchers; they also had 1-20 10 grandchildren, Stephanie P. Berno, Charles Borchers, 2-1 Corinne Borchers, Denise B. Leyendecker, DaVyne B. Aguero, 2-2 Valerie Borchers, Katrina B. Mohrer, Erica Borchers, 2-3 Alexander Borchers, and Brett Borchers, and two 2-4 great-granddaughters, Emma Berno and Margaret Berno; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Borchers helped organize the Laredo Civic 2-6 Music Association and served as its secretary for many years; 2-7 she is also a member of the Pan American Round Table, where she 2-8 has chaired many programs and a charter member of the Sultannas 2-9 of Alhambra, where she has held a variety of offices; and 2-10 WHEREAS, An active participant in the Parents Club of 2-11 Saint Joseph's Academy for 19 years, she managed the bingo games 2-12 of the carnival held each year for the academy's benefit; and 2-13 WHEREAS, Dedicated to volunteerism, she has been a member of 2-14 the board of directors of the Laredo Public Library for 20 years, 2-15 a founding member of the Colonial Ladies, a member of the Mercy 2-16 Hospital Auxiliary, and an honorary member of the Caballeros Club; 2-17 and 2-18 WHEREAS, A member of the Society of Martha Washington since 2-19 1949, she has been president and has served in various offices; 2-20 Angela and Elmore Borchers were selected to portray Martha and 2-21 George Washington in 1956, and Mrs. Borchers was a parade marshal 2-22 in 1989; and 2-23 WHEREAS, Mrs. Borchers served as president of the Blessed 3-1 Sacrament Altar Society for two years and as chairman of the 3-2 visiting committee for 10 years, calling on people in nursing 3-3 homes and visiting those who have recently had a death in the 3-4 family; and 3-5 WHEREAS, Devoutly religious, Mr. and Mrs. Borchers 3-6 entered the Lord and Lady of the Holy Sepulcher, the highest 3-7 honor bestowed on lay Catholics, in 1976; she served as a 3-8 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine teacher at Blessed Sacrament 3-9 Church for many years; this distinguished lady is certainly 3-10 deserving of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-11 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-12 76th Legislature, hereby congratulate Angela Scovazzo Borchers for 3-13 her innumerable achievements, which have greatly benefitted the 3-14 citizens of Laredo and the people of the Lone Star State; and, be 3-15 it further 3-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-17 her as an expression of the highest esteem and regard of the 3-18 Texas Senate. 3-19 Zaffirini 3-20 ______________________________________ 3-21 President of the Senate 3-22 I hereby certify that the above 3-23 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-24 on May 18, 1999. 3-25 ______________________________________ 3-26 Secretary of the Senate 3-27 ______________________________________ 3-28 Member, Texas Senate
