 1-4                                     of
 1-5                               Wayne B. Davis
 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 1-7     of Goliad in mourning the loss of Wayne B. Davis, who passed away
 1-8     April 29, 1999, at the age of 80; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, This gracious and quiet-spoken man was a pillar of
1-10     the community, and everyone that worked with or knew him admired
1-11     his dedication to his family, his community, and his country; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Born March 26, 1919, in San Antonio to the late
1-13     Wayne Burke Davis, Sr., and Jean McCampbell Davis, Mr. Davis
1-14     graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1937 and entered
1-15     Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri; and
1-16           WHEREAS, After he completed only two years of college,
1-17     World War II was declared and this Marine Corps reservist was
1-18     called to active duty; he fought at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu,
1-19     and Okinawa, received two Purple Hearts, and returned from the war
1-20     as a Marine Corps major; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, After finishing his undergraduate work at
 2-2     The University of Texas at Austin, Mr. Davis went on to postgraduate
 2-3     studies and received his bachelor of law degree in 1948; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, After a notable career with the Department of
 2-5     Justice, Conoco Oil Company, and Tenneco Oil, he returned to his
 2-6     roots and eventually followed in his father's footsteps by serving
 2-7     as county attorney for Goliad County for 20 years; and
 2-8           WHEREAS, Taking great pride in the area that he loved,
 2-9     Mr. Davis was widely respected for his leadership in the community;
2-10     he served as president of the Rotary Club and as an elder of Goliad
2-11     Presbyterian Church; and
2-12           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and wisdom,
2-13     Wayne B. Davis lived his life to the fullest and leaves many
2-14     enduring memories that will be treasured forever by his family
2-15     and friends; now, therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17     76th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
2-18     family of Wayne B. Davis:  his wife, Florine; his daughters,
2-19     Barbara Ann Carter and Pamela B. Tarkington; his son and
2-20     stepsons, Wayne Davis III, Jeffrey L. Davis, Mark Wayne Davis,
2-21     and Larry V. Davis; his sister, Mary Jean Rogers; and his nine
2-22     grandchildren; and, be it further
2-23           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-24     for members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
 3-1     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
 3-2     so in memory of Wayne B. Davis.
