1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1055 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing Dr. Gregg Cantrell of Hardin-Simmons University on his 1-5 outstanding publications on Texas history; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native of Sweetwater, Texas, Gregg Cantrell earned 1-7 a doctorate degree in history from Texas A&M University and began 1-8 his career as a professor at Sam Houston State University, where he 1-9 taught for a number of years; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Since joining Hardin-Simmons University, Dr. Cantrell 1-11 has earned numerous honors as an instructor and author, and in 1998, 1-12 he was named the Rupert N. Richardson Professor of History; and 1-13 WHEREAS, A highly accomplished scholar who is known for his 1-14 attention to detail, Dr. Cantrell has received fellowships from the 1-15 National Endowment for the Humanities and the William P. Clements 1-16 Center for Southwest Studies; he is also a skilled orator and is 1-17 sought after as a speaker for numerous events and organizations; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Dr. Cantrell's first book, Kenneth and John B. Rayner 1-19 and the Limits of Southern Dissent was honored by the Texas State 1-20 Historical Association as the best book on Texas history published in 1-21 1993; the association also selected his article "The Partnership of 1-22 Stephen F. Austin and Joseph H. Hawkins" for its H. Bailey Carroll 1-23 Award; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Cantrell's latest work, Stephen F. Austin, 2-2 Empresario of Texas, is due to be published in August of 1999 by 2-3 Yale University Press; the book is the first full-length biography 2-4 of the Father of Texas in more than 70 years and is being heralded 2-5 as a detailed account of Stephen F.
