1-1                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1084
 1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas recognizes the
 1-3     noble efforts of the United Daughters of the Confederacy to
 1-4     memorialize the Texas Confederate soldiers slain at Fort Butler,
 1-5     Louisiana, on June 28, 1863; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, The United Daughters of the Confederacy have long
 1-7     been dedicated to honoring the memory of Confederate soldiers;
 1-8     members have established countless grave markers and monuments,
 1-9     and today, the United Daughters of the Confederacy proudly continue
1-10     this tradition; and
1-11           WHEREAS, On June 28, 1863, Confederate soldiers endeavored
1-12     to retake Fort Butler; their efforts met with disaster when
1-13     301 Confederate soldiers were fired upon by a Union gunboat; and
1-14           WHEREAS, This catastrophe left hundreds of soldiers wounded
1-15     or dead; the ditch containing the remains of those deceased men
1-16     became a common grave, and for 136 years the men have lain in
1-17     inglorious anonymity; and
1-18           WHEREAS, A great many of the Confederate soldiers who fell
1-19     at Fort Butler were from the 4th, 5th, and 7th Texas Mounted
1-20     Volunteers; and
1-21           WHEREAS, On June 27, 1999, the United Daughters of the
1-22     Confederacy will give these fine men the recognition they have
1-23     long deserved; a monument honoring those Confederate soldiers who
 2-1     died at Fort Butler, Louisiana, will be erected; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate recognizes the importance of
 2-3     remembering those who died in one of our nation's most grievous
 2-4     events; the efforts to honor those Confederates who fell at
 2-5     Fort Butler and the Texans among them is indeed noble; now,
 2-6     therefore, be it
 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 2-8     76th Legislature, hereby recognize the efforts of the United
 2-9     Daughters of the Confederacy to memorialize the brave Confederate
2-10     soldiers who died at Fort Butler, Louisiana; and, be it further
2-11           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-12     this esteemed group of women as an expression of high regard
2-13     from the Texas Senate.
