 1-5                        James Eugene Schwertner, Sr.
 1-6           WHEREAS, The passing of James Eugene Schwertner, Sr., on
 1-7     July 27, 1998, at the age of 77, brought a great loss to the family
 1-8     and many friends of this distinguished gentleman; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Born August 23, 1920, in Schwertner, this native
1-10     Texan was raised on the family farm in the close-knit community
1-11     founded by and named after his grandfather, Adolph Schwertner; and
1-12           WHEREAS, In 1938 Mr. Schwertner enrolled at
1-13     Texas A&M University and studied civil engineering before enlisting
1-14     in the United States Navy in 1941; a proud member of the 4th Special
1-15     Battalion of the Navy Seabees, he served with the utmost distinction
1-16     during World War II in the Pacific Theater, fighting in both
1-17     Guadalcanal and Okinawa; and
1-18           WHEREAS, After returning to Central Texas, he married the
1-19     former Gloria Sexton in 1946 and they shared a lengthy and loving
1-20     union that was blessed with two children; that same year he built
 2-1     his first livestock auction in Austin and soon had six more
 2-2     throughout Central and South Texas, establishing a reputation as
 2-3     an honest and reliable cattle distributor; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, This highly successful enterprise became Capitol
 2-5     Land & Livestock, which today farms approximately 20,000 acres of
 2-6     land in Central Texas and annually ships more than 400,000 head
 2-7     of livestock to customers worldwide; under his direction for more
 2-8     than 51 years, the company became one of the largest livestock
 2-9     dealers in the United States and continually met the needs of an
2-10     ever-changing industry; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Although James Eugene Schwertner, Sr., has been
2-12     deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the hearts and minds of all
2-13     those who were fortunate enough to have known him, and it is indeed
2-14     appropriate to honor his memory at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of the Texas,
2-16     76th Texas Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of
2-17     James Eugene Schwertner, Sr., and extend sincere condolences to
2-18     the members of his family:  his wife, Gloria; his two children,
2-19     Jim and Sherri; his five grandchildren; and his many other
2-20     relatives and friends; and, be it further
2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
2-22     prepared for the members of his family as an expression of deepest
2-23     sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns
2-24     this day, it do so in memory of James Eugene Schwertner, Sr.
