1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1140 1-3 WHEREAS, Astronaut Fred Haise represents the bravest 1-4 of America's heroes, and his career and lifetime achievements 1-5 are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; and 1-6 WHEREAS, A native of Mississippi, Mr. Haise completed 1-7 United States Navy flight training in 1954 and graduated with 1-8 honors in aeronautical engineering from the University of 1-9 Oklahoma in 1959; shortly afterward, he began his respected 1-10 20-year association with NASA as an aeronautical research pilot 1-11 at Lewis Research Center; and 1-12 WHEREAS, He was recalled into the United States Air Force 1-13 with the 164th TAC fighter squadron in 1961 and logged over 9,100 1-14 hours of flight time in more than 80 types of aircraft; and 1-15 WHEREAS, It is his extraordinary service with NASA for 1-16 which Mr. Haise is most renowned: from his roles as test pilot, 1-17 astronaut, and back-up crew member for the Apollo 8, 11, and 16 1-18 missions, to his position as lunar module pilot for the aborted 1-19 Apollo 13 flight, he has set the highest examples of resourcefulness, 1-20 bravery, and ability; and 1-21 WHEREAS, His continued tenure with NASA included five 1-22 flights as the commander of the Space Shuttle Enterprise in 1977, 1-23 and he has been presented with a number of prestigious awards and 2-1 commendations, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the 2-2 General Thomas D. White Space Trophy, and the NASA Distinguished 2-3 Service Medal; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Recently retired as president of Northrop 2-5 Grumman Technical Services, Mr. Haise continues to serve 2-6 his country as a committed and concerned community leader; 2-7 he works with educators and school systems on technology 2-8 implementation and instruction and is taking an active role 2-9 in preventing a toxic landfill from being developed near his 2-10 Beach City neighbors; and 2-11 WHEREAS, From miles into space to the shores of 2-12 Galveston Bay, Fred Haise has broadened America's scope 2-13 of what is possible when a community shares a vision and 2-14 an individual is determined to see that vision through, and 2-15 it is indeed fitting to honor him at this time; now, therefore, 2-16 be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 76th Legislature, hereby commend astronaut Fred Haise for 2-19 his many years of valiant service to America and to Texas 2-20 and extend to him warm wishes for even greater success and 2-21 happiness in the years ahead; and, be it further 2-22 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-23 prepared for Mr. Haise as an expression of high regard from the 2-24 Texas Senate. 2-25 Bernsen 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the above 3-2 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-3 on May 26, 1999. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
