 1-2                         SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1156
 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the families
 1-4     and friends of Bree Stephens, Jared Volger, and Ty Barton in
 1-5     congratulating them for winning the Texas Association of Community
 1-6     Schools Seventh-Annual Small Schools Academic State Championship;
 1-7     and
 1-8           WHEREAS, Representing the Klondike Independent School
 1-9     District as Team I, these outstanding young people rose to the
1-10     challenge and defeated 38 other regional qualifiers at the
1-11     competition hosted by Howard Payne University; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Beginning as a regional competition in
1-13     Coleman, Texas, in 1989, the Small Schools Academic State
1-14     Championship had grown to a statewide competition, which is
1-15     sponsored by the Texas Association of Community Schools, by
1-16     1993; and participation is limited to Texas Association of
1-17     Community School members who have a University Interscholastic
1-18     League ranking of AAA or lower; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The championship is recognized as the highest
1-20     paying academic competition in the state, and the rivalry to
1-21     participate and win is astounding; members of the winning team
1-22     for Klondike received $8,592 in scholarships with a grand total
 2-1     of $66,076 awarded in 1999 to area and statewide competitors; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Fending off a last minute rally by Glasscock High
 2-3     School, Bree, Jared, and Ty responded to the charge, retained the
 2-4     lead, and brought the championship title home to the Klondike
 2-5     Independent School District; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, With the support of Superintendent Scott King
 2-7     and Principal Dwaine Brown and the encouragement of Academic Team
 2-8     Coaches Daphna Busic, Mike Matthews, Ray Wills, and Barbara Archer,
 2-9     the Klondike teams placed first, third, and fifth in the statewide
2-10     competition; and
2-11           WHEREAS, Encouraging academic achievement is the ultimate
2-12     goal of this competition, and Bree, Jared, and Ty attained this
2-13     and more; these outstanding young people brought honor and statewide
2-14     recognition to themselves, their families, and their school; now,
2-15     therefore, be it
2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-17     76th Legislature, hereby commend Bree Stephens, Jared Volger, and
2-18     Ty Barton for their superb accomplishments and extend best wishes
2-19     to them for continued success in all their endeavors; and, be it
2-20     further
2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
2-22     expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
