1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1166 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas proudly joins 1-4 citizens across America in observing our national holiday, 1-5 Memorial Day, on Monday, May 31, 1999; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day 1-7 and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed 1-8 on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers; in 1968, Congress 1-9 designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day; and 1-10 WHEREAS, On Memorial Day, we pay homage to those who lost 1-11 their lives fighting for our nation, for it is due to their 1-12 courage and sacrifice that today our nation is free and 1-13 prosperous; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The promise of freedom was articulated by 1-15 our Declaration of Independence and made real by the American 1-16 Revolution, and the promise of democracy was preserved by the 1-17 hundreds of thousands of Americans who fought and died in 1-18 World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf; 1-19 and 1-20 WHEREAS, The men and women who died for our country gave 2-1 their lives to safeguard our future, and Memorial Day is an 2-2 opportunity for American citizens to pay tribute to them for their 2-3 heroism; and 2-4 WHEREAS, This special day is also an opportunity for 2-5 Americans everywhere to express their heartfelt gratitude to 2-6 the United States veterans, both living and dead, for the 2-7 valor and dedication they have shown on behalf of our beloved 2-8 country; today, there are more than two million veterans living 2-9 in Texas, the second largest community of veterans in the nation; 2-10 and 2-11 WHEREAS, Proud of being Americans and ever mindful of 2-12 the duties and responsibilities inherent in good citizenship, 2-13 the men and women of our armed services deserve praise for their 2-14 loyal defense of our country and its ideals; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Those who died for their country have left 2-16 behind legacies of courage and devotion for generations of 2-17 American citizens and memories that will be treasured forever 2-18 in the hearts and minds of all who knew them; and 2-19 WHEREAS, It is a grateful nation today that reflects upon 2-20 our American heritage and recognizes the extreme sacrifices 2-21 made by all who serve in the armed forces; now, therefore, 2-22 be it 2-23 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-1 76th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to all the brave 3-2 men and women who have served our country and honor the memory 3-3 of those who died on its behalf; and, be it further 3-4 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in 3-5 honor of all who died in an effort to protect their families 3-6 and our great nation. 3-7 Truan 3-8 Armbrister Gallegos Nixon 3-9 Barrientos Harris Ogden 3-10 Bernsen Haywood Ratliff 3-11 Bivins Jackson Shapiro 3-12 Brown Lindsay Shapleigh 3-13 Cain Lucio Sibley 3-14 Carona Luna Wentworth 3-15 Duncan Madla West 3-16 Ellis Moncrief Whitmire 3-17 Fraser Nelson Zaffirini 3-18 Perry, President of the Senate 3-19 ______________________________________ 3-20 President of the Senate 3-21 I hereby certify that the above 3-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-23 on May 31, 1999. 3-24 ______________________________________ 3-25 Secretary of the Senate 3-26 ______________________________________ 3-27 Dean of the Senate
