1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1211 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize MacArthur Elementary School of the Galena Park 1-4 Independent School District for achieving national recognition 1-5 for the outstanding mentoring efforts put forth on behalf of 1-6 at-risk students for the 1997-1998 school year; and 1-7 WHEREAS, Attaining Exemplary status for the Helping One 1-8 Student To Succeed (HOSTS) program puts MacArthur Elementary 1-9 in a very elite group of schools from across the nation for 1-10 the second consecutive year; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Implementation of this structured mentoring 1-12 program for language arts skills has proven very successful; 1-13 the program has been expanded to include both English and 1-14 Spanish, and MacArthur Elementary is the only school in the 1-15 district to do so; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Under the guidance of 27-year teaching veteran 1-17 Rose Moreno and the assistance of Judy Flynn and Ercilia Garcia, 1-18 the program creates a cycle for student success, accelerates 1-19 learning, builds self-esteem, and contains costs through the 1-20 use of mentoring; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The ultimate goal is to pair each child with a 1-22 mentor who can inspire the student to achieve the highest 1-23 potential; and 2-1 WHEREAS, In soliciting the aid of 143 mentors, the school 2-2 had approximately 990 hours contributed to the program, which 2-3 represents a value of $12,712 for the 1997-1998 school year; 2-4 and 2-5 WHEREAS, Making a concerted effort to improve the lives of 2-6 these young students is an admirable endeavor; making a concerted 2-7 effort that attains a level of excellence worthy of national 2-8 recognition is momentous; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 76th Legislature, hereby commend MacArthur Elementary School 2-11 and its mentoring program for achieving national recognition; 2-12 and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-14 MacArthur Elementary School as an expression of high regard from 2-15 the Texas Senate. 2-16 Gallegos 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 President of the Senate 2-19 I hereby certify that the above 2-20 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-21 on May 31, 1999. 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Secretary of the Senate 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 Member, Texas Senate
