LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 76th Regular Session March 20, 1999 TO: Honorable Paul Sadler, Chair, House Committee on Public Education FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: HB1120 by Najera (Relating to exceptions to public school class size limits granted by the commissioner of education), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** Local Government Impact This bill would limit the enrollment in a classroom excepted from class size limitations to a maximum of 27 students. The Texas Education Agency estimates that a total of 194 students would be affected by the bill. The districts receiving waivers in which these 194 students are located would need to create about 10 new sections for the affected grade levels to meet the requirements proposed by this bill. The local cost for salaries and benefits for 10 additional teacher is estimated to be about $369,090 annually. It is assumed that districts would meet the needs for these sections through temporary construction, which is estimated to cost about $34,000 per classroom. The total local cost of adding the additional 10 classrooms would be about $340,000. Source Agencies: LBB Staff: JK, CT, RN
