LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 76th Regular Session April 16, 1999 TO: Honorable Bob Turner, Chair, House Committee on Public Safety FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: HB2673 by Keel (Relating to continuing education programs for peace officers and county jailers.), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** Local Government Impact The bill would reduce requirements for some types of peace officer's and county jailer's continuing education from every 24 months to every 48 months. The savings to local government could be substantial. Savings for peace officer training could be as great as $13,909,352 per year (58,898 peace officers x 16 hours of training x $14.76 per hour [The findings in a recent survey of 165 agencies]). The maximum savings for county jail officers who take 8 hours of training x $10 per hour x 19,359 county jail officers equals $1,548,720.
