LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 76th Regular Session March 5, 1999 TO: Honorable Florence Shapiro, Chair, Senate Committee on State Affairs FROM: John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: SB693 by Cain (Relating to public notice of and public hearings on proposed ad valorem tax rates.), As Introduced ************************************************************************** * No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. * ************************************************************************** The bill would amend Chapters 25 and 26 of the Tax Code to require a taxing unit that proposes to exceed its effective tax rate to publish notices and hold a public hearing on the tax increase. Current law requires a taxing unit to hold a public hearing and to publish newspaper notices before adopting a tax rate that would result in any increase in total revenue from the preceding year.
