MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS Wednesday, April 14, 1999 1:00 p.m. Capitol Building, Room 2E.20 ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.11, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Nominations was held on Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in the Capitol Building, Room 2E.20, Austin, Texas. ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Jeff Wentworth, Chairman Senator Gonzalo Barrientos Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr., Vice Chairman Senator David Bernsen Senator J. E. Brown Senator Tom Haywood Senator Mike Jackson ***** The Chairman called the meeting to order at 1:25 p.m. There being a quorum present, the following business was transacted. The following members arrived after the roll was called: Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr. Senator Mike Jackson Senator Brown moved that the Minutes from the previous meeting be approved. There being no objection, the Minutes were adopted. The Chairman laid out the names of the nominees to the Texas Tech University Board of Regents. Chairman Wentworth introduced Carin Marcy Barth and Brian C. Newby. Senator Carona introduced E. R. "Dick" Brooks. Nominees made opening statements and then responded to questions by members of the Committee. At 1:45 p.m., Senator Bernsen moved to recommend to the full Senate that Carin Marcy Barth, E. R. "Dick" Brooks and Brian C. Newby be confirmed as Members of the Texas Tech University Board of Regents. The motion carried with a vote of 6 ayes and 0 nays. At 1:46 pm Senator Gallegos assumed the Chair. The Chairman laid out the names of the nominees for the General Services Commission. Senator Gallegos introduced James A. Cox, Jr. and Tomas Cardenas, Jr. Senator Shapiro introduced Fred N. Moses. Nominees made opening statements and then responded to questions by members of the Committee. At 1:57 p.m., Senator Brown moved to recommend to the full Senate that James A. Cox, Jr., Tomas Cardenas, Jr. and Fred N. Moses be confirmed as Members of the General Services Commission. The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes and 0 nays. The Chairman laid out the names of the nominees to the Texas Department of Information Resources Board of Directors. Senator Shapiro introduced Carol S. Greisdorf. Senator Gallegos introduced Mario J. Gonzalez. Nominees made opening statements and then responded to questions by members of the Committee. At 2:05 p.m., Senator Jackson moved to recommend to the full Senate that Carol S. Greisdorf and Mario J. Gonzalez be confirmed as Members of the Texas Department of Information Resources Board of Directors. The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes and 0 nays. Senator Gallegos announced that the nomination of Rolf R. Haberecht would be left pending. The Chairman laid out the name of the nominee to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Senator Gallegos introduced Kenneth R. Carr. Mr. Carr made an opening statement and then responded to questions by members of the Committee. At 2:16 p.m., Senator Jackson moved to recommend to the full Senate that Kenneth A. Carr be confirmed as Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes and 0 nays. Senator Gallegos announced that consideration of the nomination of Richard N. Mack to the Council on Sex Offender Treatment would be left pending until he files a Personal Financial Statement with the Texas Ethics Commission. At 2:17 p.m., Senator Jackson moved to recommend to the full Senate that the remaining nominees to the Council on Sex Offender Treatment, and the nominees to the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners, the Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners, the Interagency Council on Autism and Pervasive Development Disorders, the Texas Appraisers Licensing and Certification Board, the Judge of the 215th Judicial District Court of Harris County, the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct, the Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas--Non Lawyer Members, and the Employees Retirement System of Texas Board of Trustees be confirmed. The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes and 0 nays. There being no further business, at 2:20 p.m. Senator Gallegos announced that the Committee would stand recessed subject to the call of the Chairman. Without objection it was so ordered.
