HBA-KDB H.B. 497 77(R)BILL ANALYSIS Office of House Bill AnalysisH.B. 497 By: Chisum Judicial Affairs 7/18/2001 Enrolled BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Under current law, district attorneys may maintain an independent law practice to supplement their pay unless their office is listed in the Professional Prosecutors Act, which provides additional state funding to supplement existing salaries in exchange for prohibiting the prosecutor from the private practice of law. House Bill 497 adds the district attorney for the 31st Judicial District to the list of prosecutors who are subject to the professional prosecutors law. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY It is the opinion of the Office of House Bill Analysis that this bill does not expressly delegate any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution. ANALYSIS House Bill 497 amends the Government Code to add the district attorney for the 31st Judicial District to the list of prosecutors who are subject to the professional prosecutors law. EFFECTIVE DATE September 1, 2001.
