However, with the growing population of elderly patients, geriatric training may be an appropriate requirement for graduation from a medical school. H.B. 2584 creates the Commission on Geriatrics Study Requirement for Medical School to assess the feasibility or desirability of making the study of geriatrics a requisite for graduation from a medical school in this state. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY Rulemaking authority is expressly granted to the Commission on Geriatrics Study Requirement for Medical School in SECTION 1 (Section 61.088, Education Code) of this bill. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Chapter 61C, Education Code, by adding Section 61.088, as follows: Sec. 61.088. COMMISSION ON GERIATRICS STUDY REQUIREMENT FOR MEDICAL SCHOOL. (a) Defines "commission." (b) Provides that the Commission on Geriatrics Study Requirement for Medical School (commission) is an advisory body to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (board) and is not subject to Chapter 2110 (State Agency Advisory Committees), Government Code. (c) Require the president of each institution of higher education (institution) that operates a medical school to designate a person to serve on the commission as a representative of the medical school. Authorizes the board to appoint additional members to the commission as the board considers appropriate. (d) Authorizes the commission to adopt rules for the commission's procedures. (e) Prohibits a member of the commission from receiving compensation for service on the commission. (f) Sets forth certain requirements of the commission regarding the study of geriatrics. (g) Requires the commission, not later than October 1, 2002, to issue a report of the commission's studies, findings, and recommendations and to deliver a copy of the report to the coordinating board. (h) Provides that the commission is abolished and this section expires January 1, 2003. SECTION 2. (a) Effective date: September 1, 2001. (b) Requires the president of each institution that operates a medical school to designate a representative to serve on the commission as required by Section 61.088(c), Education Code, as added by this Act, not later than October 1, 2001.
