DIGEST AND PURPOSE

Currently, peace officers employed by the Office of the Attorney General
are excluded from receiving benefits from the Employees Retirement System
even though they perform duties similar to peace officers employed by other
agencies. As proposed, S.B. 383 redefines "law enforcement officer" to
include those persons commissioned and employed as peace officers by the
Office of Attorney General, allowing them to receive benefits from the
Employees Retirement System of Texas.
