SRC-JEC S.B. 973 77(R) BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research Center S.B. 973 77R3743 ATP-DBy: Cain Intergovernmental Relations 3/16/2001 As Filed DIGEST AND PURPOSE Current Texas law is vague as to what constitutes overtime work. Dallas police officers work a standard 40 hour work week and are compensated for overtime at the rate of time and a half. As proposed, S.B. 973 codifies that procedure, to avoid any future attempts to have Dallas police officers work overtime without adequate compensation. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Section 142.0015(f), Local Government Code, to provide that, except as provided by this section, a police officer may not be required to work: (1) more than 40 hours during a calendar week in a municipality that meets certain criteria; or (2) more hours during a calendar week than the number of hours in the normal work week of the majority of the employees of the municipality other than fire fighters and police officers in a municipality not described by Subdivision (1). SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 2001.
