DIGEST AND PURPOSE

Since 1956, the services provided at South Texas Hospital, located in
Harlingen, have increased to such an extent that the hospital is now a
major provider of sub-acute indigent care in its region. In 1999, the 76th
Legislature passed H.B. 3504 and S.B. 1615 to contract for outpatient
services, construct new facilities, and authorize county and hospital
districts to pool resources through the creation of a health services
district. S.B. 1065 changes the name of South Texas Hospital to the South
Texas Health Care System in order to reflect the new framework created by
past legislation, continued development, and the potential for future
growth.
