DIGEST AND PURPOSE 

Currently the 361st District Court has criminal jurisdiction over both
felony and misdemeanor cases, while the 85th and 272nd district courts have
only felony criminal jurisdiction.  As proposed, S.B. 1433 expands the
jurisdiction of the 85th and 272nd district courts to include misdemeanor
criminal jurisdiction to help handle the misdemeanor case load. 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a
state officer, institution, or agency.  

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1.  Amends Section 24.187, Government Code, to provide that the
85th District Court has concurrent jurisdiction with the statutory county
courts of Brazos County in misdemeanor cases as well as the jurisdiction
prescribed by general law for district courts. 

SECTION 2.  Amends Section 24.449, Government Code, to provide that the
272nd District Court has concurrent jurisdiction with the statutory county
courts of Brazos County in misdemeanor cases as well as the jurisdiction
prescribed by general law for district courts. 

SECTION 3.  Amends Section 24.506, Government Code, to provide that the
361st District Court has concurrent jurisdiction with the statutory county
courts of Brazos County in misdemeanor cases as well as the jurisdiction
prescribed by general law for district courts.  Deletes text regarding the
361st District Court having and exercising jurisdiction in misdemeanor
cases. 

SECTION 4.  Effective date: September 1, 2001.
