 1-8                                   AN ACT
 1-9     relating to the authority of the Texas Higher Education
1-10     Coordinating Board to conduct a feasibility study regarding the
1-11     creation of a doctor of medicine degree program at Prairie View A&M
1-12     University.
1-13           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-14           SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 87, Education Code, is
1-15     amended by adding Section 87.107 to read as follows:
1-16           Sec. 87.107.   FEASIBILITY STUDY REGARDING CREATION OF DOCTOR
1-17     OF MEDICINE DEGREE PROGRAM. (a)  In this section, "institution of
1-18     higher education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003.
1-19           (b)  The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, with the
1-20     assistance of the board of regents of The Texas A&M University
1-21     System, may conduct a study to evaluate the feasibility of an
1-22     affiliation or coordinating agreement between the board of regents
1-23     and any institution of higher education to provide the clinical
1-24     education necessary to support a doctor of medicine degree program
1-25     at Prairie View A&M University.
1-26           (c)  A study conducted under Subsection (b) must be completed
1-27     on or before December 31, 2002.
1-28           (d)  This section expires September 1, 2003.
1-29           SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a
1-30     vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-31     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-32     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-33     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
