No. 108 1-2 (In the Senate - Received from the House April 9, 2001; 1-3 April 9, 2001, read first time and referred to Committee on 1-4 Education; May 3, 2001, reported favorably by the following vote: 1-5 Yeas 7, Nays 0; May 3, 2001, sent to printer.) 1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-7 AN ACT 1-8 relating to creating a recognition day in honor of education 1-9 paraprofessionals. 1-10 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-11 SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 662, Government Code, is 1-12 amended by adding Section 662.049 to read as follows: 1-13 Sec. 662.049. PUBLIC SCHOOL PARAPROFESSIONAL DAY. (a) The 1-14 second Wednesday in May of each year is Public School 1-15 Paraprofessional Day in recognition of education paraprofessionals 1-16 including teacher assistants, instructional aides, educational 1-17 trainers, library attendants, bilingual assistants, special 1-18 education associates, mentors, and tutors. 1-19 (b) Public School Paraprofessional Day shall be regularly 1-20 observed by appropriate ceremonies and activities in the public 1-21 schools and other places to properly recognize the 1-22 paraprofessionals who have made tremendous contributions to the 1-23 educational process. 1-24 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives 1-25 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as 1-26 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this 1-27 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this 1-28 Act takes effect September 1, 2001. 1-29 * * * * *
