No. 116 77R557 DWS-D A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to registration with the Selective Service System of 1-3 certain applicants for a driver's license or personal 1-4 identification certificate. 1-5 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-6 SECTION 1. Subchapter G, Chapter 521, Transportation Code, 1-7 is amended by adding Section 521.147 to read as follows: 1-8 Sec. 521.147. REGISTRATION WITH SELECTIVE SERVICE SYSTEM. 1-9 (a) After an application for an original, renewal, or duplicate 1-10 driver's license or personal identification certificate is 1-11 submitted by a male applicant who on the date of the application is 1-12 at least 18 years of age but younger than 26 years of age, the 1-13 department shall send in an electronic format to the United States 1-14 Selective Service System the information from the application 1-15 necessary to register the applicant under the Military Selective 1-16 Service Act (50 U.S.C. App. Section 451 et seq.), as amended. 1-17 (b) Before accepting an application from an applicant to 1-18 which this section applies, the department shall orally notify the 1-19 applicant that the application for a driver's license or personal 1-20 identification certificate also constitutes registration with the 1-21 United States Selective Service System for persons who are subject 1-22 to registration and who have not previously registered. The 1-23 applicant's submission of application following this notification 1-24 constitutes the applicant's consent to the sending of the 2-1 information and the registration. 2-2 (c) In addition to the notification required by Subsection 2-3 (b), the department may conspicuously post at each location where 2-4 applications for driver's licenses and personal identification 2-5 certificates are accepted one or more signs, in English and 2-6 Spanish, providing the information contained in the notification. 2-7 (d) This section does not apply to an applicant concerning 2-8 whom the department has previously sent information to the 2-9 Selective Service System under Subsection (a). 2-10 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2001, and 2-11 applies only to an application submitted on or after that date.
