1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to a pilot program to provide for reduced undergraduate
 1-3     tuition during a summer term or session at certain institutions of
 1-4     higher education.
 1-5           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-6           SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 54, Education Code, is
 1-7     amended by adding Section 54.0514 to read as follows:
 1-8           Sec. 54.0514.  SPECIAL SUMMER TUITION RATES AT CERTAIN
 1-9     INSTITUTIONS:  PILOT PROGRAM. (a)  This section applies only to a
1-10     resident undergraduate student enrolled for a summer term or
1-11     session at one of the following general academic teaching
1-12     institutions:
1-13                 (1)  Texas A&M University; and
1-14                 (2)  Texas A&M University--Kingsville.
1-15           (b)  Tuition, other than tuition under Section 54.0513,
1-16     charged to a student to whom this section applies is one-half of
1-17     the amount otherwise provided by this subchapter.
1-18           (c)  The amount that the governing board of an institution
1-19     may charge as tuition under Section 54.0513 to a student to whom
1-20     this section applies may not exceed one-half of the amount the
1-21     governing board would otherwise be authorized to charge to the
1-22     student under Section 54.0513.
1-23           (d)  This section applies to an institution listed in
1-24     Subsection (a)  only if the legislature specifically appropriates
 2-1     money to the institution for the state fiscal biennium ending
 2-2     August 31, 2003, to cover the tuition revenue lost to the
 2-3     institution by the application of this section.
 2-4           (e)  This section applies only to a summer term or session in
 2-5     2002 or 2003.  This section expires January 1, 2004.
 2-6           SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
