A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to tuition charged at state institutions of higher
1-3 education for a summer term or session.
1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-5 SECTION 1. Section 54.051(c), Education Code, is amended to
1-6 read as follows:
1-7 (c) Unless a different rate is specified by this section,
1-8 tuition for a resident student at a general academic teaching
1-9 institution is:
1-10 (1) for a semester other than a summer term or
1-11 session, the greater of[:]
1-12 [(1)] $120 for the [each] semester [or 12-week summer
1-13 session and $60 for each six-week summer term;] or
1-14 [(2)] $40 per semester credit hour;
1-15 (2) for a summer term or session of 12 weeks or more,
1-16 the greater of $60 for the term or session or $20 per semester
1-17 credit hour; and
1-18 (3) for a summer term or session of less than 12
1-19 weeks, the greater of $30 for the term or session or $20 per
1-20 semester credit hour.
1-21 SECTION 2. Section 54.0513(b), Education Code, is amended to
1-22 read as follows:
1-23 (b) In addition to amounts that a governing board of an
1-24 institution of higher education is authorized to charge as tuition
2-1 under this chapter, the governing board is authorized to charge as
2-2 tuition the following maximum amounts:
2-3 (1) [$34 per semester credit hour for the 1997-1998
2-4 academic year;]
2-5 [(2) $36 per semester credit hour for the 1998-1999
2-6 academic year;]
2-7 [(3) $38 per semester credit hour for the 1999-2000
2-8 academic year; and]
2-9 [(4)] $40 per semester credit hour for a semester
2-10 other than a summer term or session; and
2-11 (2) $20 per semester credit hour for a summer term or
2-12 session [the 2000-2001 academic year and each academic year
2-13 thereafter].
2-14 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect January 1, 2002, and applies
2-15 only to tuition charged for a session, term, or semester that
2-16 begins on or after that date.
