 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to a pilot program to provide for reduced undergraduate
 1-9     tuition during a summer term or session at certain institutions of
1-10     higher education.
1-11           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-12           SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 54, Education Code, is
1-13     amended by adding Section 54.0514 to read as follows:
1-14           Sec. 54.0514.  SPECIAL SUMMER TUITION RATES AT CERTAIN
1-15     INSTITUTIONS:  PILOT PROGRAM. (a)  This section applies only to a
1-16     resident undergraduate student enrolled for a summer term or
1-17     session at one of the following general academic teaching
1-18     institutions:
1-19                 (1)  Texas A&M University; and
1-20                 (2)  Texas A&M University--Kingsville.
1-21           (b)  Tuition, other than tuition under Section 54.0513,
1-22     charged to a student to whom this section applies is one-half of
1-23     the amount otherwise provided by this subchapter.
1-24           (c)  The amount that the governing board of an institution
1-25     may charge as tuition under Section 54.0513 to a student to whom
1-26     this section applies may not exceed one-half of the amount the
1-27     governing board would otherwise be authorized to charge to the
1-28     student under Section 54.0513.
1-29           (d)  This section applies to an institution listed in
1-30     Subsection (a)  only if the legislature specifically appropriates
1-31     money to the institution for the state fiscal biennium ending
1-32     August 31, 2003, to cover the tuition revenue lost to the
1-33     institution by the application of this section.
1-34           (e)  This section applies only to a summer term or session in
1-35     2002 or 2003.  This section expires January 1, 2004.
1-36           SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
