                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to prohibiting the Department of Public Safety of the
 1-3     State of Texas from disclosing certain personal information.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Subchapter C, Chapter 552, Government Code, is
 1-6     amended by adding Section 552.137 to read as follows:
 1-7           Sec. 552.137.  PROHIBITION ON DISCLOSURE OF CERTAIN PERSONAL
 1-8     INFORMATION BY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY.  (a)  Notwithstanding
 1-9     any other law, a person's physical address, mailing address,
1-10     telephone number, electronic or photographic image, or social
1-11     security number may not be disclosed to a member of the public by
1-12     the Department of Public Safety of the State of Texas in response
1-13     to a request for the information made under this chapter or another
1-14     law of this state.
1-15           (b)  Subsection (a) does not:
1-16                 (1)  prohibit the disclosure of a person's zip code; or
1-17                 (2)  apply to information requested about a person who,
1-18     at the time the request is made, is registered as a sex offender
1-19     under Chapter 62, Code of Criminal Procedure.
1-20           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-21     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-22     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-23     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-24     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
