 1-6                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to the degree-granting authority of The University of
 1-9     Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
1-10           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-11           SECTION 1.  Section 73.102, Education Code, is amended by
1-12     amending Subsection (b) and by adding Subsection (c) to read as
1-13     follows:
1-14           (b)  If the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
1-15     determines that the role and mission of the institution should be
1-16     changed to include degree-granting authority, the board of regents
1-17     may:
1-18                 (1)  prescribe courses and conduct allied health
1-19     professional degree programs related to the purposes of the
1-20     institution described by Subsection (a); and
1-21                 (2)  jointly prescribe courses and jointly conduct
1-22     graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels related to
1-23     those purposes with The University of Texas Health Science Center
1-24     at Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
1-25           (c)  The degree programs to be offered under Subsection (b)
1-26     are subject to approval by the coordinating board.
1-27           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-28     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-29     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-30     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-31     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
