No. 821 77R9779 CAS-F A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to cardiopulmonary resuscitation instruction for public 1-3 school students. 1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 7, Education Code, is 1-6 amended by adding Section 7.025 to read as follows: 1-7 Sec. 7.025. ASSISTANCE TO SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND OTHER 1-8 ENTITIES CONCERNING CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION INSTRUCTION. The 1-9 agency, through regional education service centers, shall provide 1-10 assistance in implementing the cardiopulmonary resuscitation 1-11 instruction required under Section 28.002(a)(2)(B) to school 1-12 districts and to any entity collaborating with school districts in 1-13 providing that instruction. 1-14 SECTION 2. Section 28.002(a), Education Code, is amended to 1-15 read as follows: 1-16 (a) Each school district that offers kindergarten through 1-17 grade 12 shall offer, as a required curriculum: 1-18 (1) a foundation curriculum that includes: 1-19 (A) English language arts; 1-20 (B) mathematics; 1-21 (C) science; and 1-22 (D) social studies, consisting of Texas, United 1-23 States, and world history, government, and geography; and 1-24 (2) an enrichment curriculum that includes: 1-25 (A) to the extent possible, languages other than 2-1 English; 2-2 (B) health, with specific instruction in the 2-3 principles and techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation given at 2-4 least once at the ninth grade level or above; 2-5 (C) physical education; 2-6 (D) fine arts; 2-7 (E) economics, with emphasis on the free 2-8 enterprise system and its benefits; 2-9 (F) career and technology education; and 2-10 (G) technology applications. 2-11 SECTION 3. Section 28.002(a)(2)(B), Education Code, as 2-12 amended by this Act, applies beginning with the 2001-2002 school 2-13 year. 2-14 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives 2-15 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as 2-16 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this 2-17 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this 2-18 Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
