 1-7                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-8                                   AN ACT
 1-9     relating to an additional fee to support trauma centers to be
1-10     collected when a motor vehicle is registered.
1-11           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-12           SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 502, Transportation Code, is
1-13     amended by adding Section 502.1711 to read as follows:
1-14           Sec. 502.1711.  ADDITIONAL FEE FOR TRAUMA CENTERS. (a)  In
1-15     addition to other fees imposed under this chapter for a license
1-16     plate or set of license plates or other device used as the
1-17     registration insignia, a fee of $5 shall be collected.
1-18           (b)  On the first Monday of each month, the county
1-19     assessor-collector shall send the fee collected under this section
1-20     to the comptroller for deposit in the tertiary care account under
1-21     Section 46.003, Health and Safety Code.
1-22           (c)  The county assessor-collector may retain an amount equal
1-23     to not more than 10 percent of each fee collected under Subsection
1-24     (a).  The assessor-collector shall deposit any amount retained
1-25     under this subsection in the county treasury to the credit of the
1-26     general fund and shall petition the commissioners court for the
1-27     amount necessary to administer this section.  The commissioners
1-28     court may allocate money deposited in the county treasury under
1-29     this subsection that is not allocated to the assessor-collector to
1-30     administer this section for general purposes of the county.
1-31           SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
