                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to study of the contributions of Hispanics to the United
 1-3     States military in public schools.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
 1-6     adding Subsection (l) to read as follows:
 1-7           (l)  Instruction in United States history shall include study
 1-8     in appropriate grade levels of the contributions of Hispanics to
 1-9     the United States military, including the events described in
1-10     "Hispanics in America's Defense," published by the United States
1-11     Department of Defense, Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of
1-12     Defense for Military Manpower and Personnel Policy.
1-13           SECTION 2.  This Act applies beginning with the 2001-2002
1-14     school year.
1-15           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-16     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-17     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-18     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-19     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
