A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to changing the name of the South Texas Hospital to the
1-3 South Texas Health Care Center and to eliminating certain obsolete
1-4 provisions relating to the hospital.
1-5 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-6 SECTION 1. Section 11.004(a), Health and Safety Code, is
1-7 amended to read as follows:
1-8 (a) The department is composed of the board, the
1-9 commissioner, an administrative staff, the Texas Center for
1-10 Infectious Disease, the South Texas Health Care Center [Hospital],
1-11 and other officers and employees necessary to perform efficiently
1-12 its powers and duties.
1-13 SECTION 2. Section 13.003, Health and Safety Code, is amended
1-14 to read as follows:
1-15 Sec. 13.003. SERVICES AT SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH CARE CENTER
1-16 [HOSPITAL]. (a) The primary purpose of the South Texas Health Care
1-17 Center [Hospital] is to provide inpatient and outpatient services,
1-18 either directly or by contract with one or more public or private
1-19 health care providers or entities, to the residents of the Lower
1-20 Rio Grande Valley.
1-21 (b) The board may establish at the South Texas Health Care
1-22 Center [Hospital]:
1-23 (1) cancer screening;
1-24 (2) diagnostic services;
2-1 (3) educational services;
2-2 (4) obstetrical services;
2-3 (5) gynecological services;
2-4 (6) other inpatient health care services; and
2-5 (7) outpatient health care services, including
2-6 diagnostic, treatment, disease management, and supportive care
2-7 services.
2-8 SECTION 3. Section 13.033(5), Health and Safety Code, is
2-9 amended to read as follows:
2-10 (5) "State chest hospital" means the Texas Center for
2-11 Infectious Disease and the South Texas Health Care Center
2-12 [Hospital].
2-13 SECTION 4. (a) Sections 13.007 and 13.008, Health and
2-14 Safety Code, are repealed.
2-15 (b) Subchapter C, Chapter 13, Health and Safety Code, is
2-16 repealed.
2-17 SECTION 5. (a) A reference in law to the South Texas
2-18 Hospital means the South Texas Health Care Center.
2-19 (b) An appropriation to the Texas Department of Health for
2-20 the use and benefit of the South Texas Hospital is available for
2-21 the use and benefit of the South Texas Health Care Center.
2-22 SECTION 6. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a
2-23 vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2-24 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2-25 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2-26 Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
