 1-8                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-9                                   AN ACT
1-10     relating to petition requirements for an application for a place on
1-11     the general primary election ballot for certain judicial
1-12     candidates.
1-13           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-14           SECTION 1.  Section 172.021, Election Code, is amended by
1-15     adding Subsection (g) to read as follows:
1-16           (g)  A candidate for the office of chief justice or justice,
1-17     supreme court or presiding judge or judge, court of criminal
1-18     appeals who chooses to pay the filing fee must also accompany the
1-19     application with a petition that complies with the requirements
1-20     prescribed for the petition authorized by Subsection (b), except
1-21     that the minimum number of signatures that must appear on the
1-22     petition required by this subsection is 100 each from five state
1-23     senatorial districts.
1-24           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
