                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the observance of Veterans Day in public schools.
 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is
 1-5     amended by adding Section 28.007 to read as follows:
 1-6           Sec. 28.007.  OBSERVANCE OF VETERANS DAY. (a)  Each Veterans
 1-7     Day, for students in each grade level, a school shall conduct an
 1-8     appropriate program remembering and honoring veterans of the United
 1-9     States armed forces.  The program must be provided for at least an
1-10     entire class period.
1-11           (b)  If a school is not in session on Veterans Day, the
1-12     school shall conduct the program required by Subsection (a)  on:
1-13                 (1)  the last school day before Veterans Day; or
1-14                 (2)  the first school day after Veterans Day.
1-15           SECTION 2.  Section 28.007, Education Code, as added by this
1-16     Act, applies beginning with the 2001-2002 school year.
1-17           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
