                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to application for registration of vehicles used by
 1-3     nonprofit disaster relief organizations.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Section 502.203(b), Transportation Code, is
 1-6     amended to read as follows:
 1-7           (b)  An application for registration under this section must
 1-8     include:
 1-9                 (1)  a statement by the owner of the vehicle that the
1-10     vehicle is used exclusively for emergencies and has not been used
1-11     for any other purpose;
1-12                 (2)  a statement signed by an officer of the nonprofit
1-13     disaster relief organization [by the sheriff of the county in which
1-14     the vehicle is registered] that the vehicle has not been used for
1-15     any purpose other than emergencies and qualifies for registration
1-16     under this section; and
1-17                 (3)  a reasonable description of the vehicle and the
1-18     emergency equipment included in the vehicle.
1-19           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001, and
1-20     applies only to an application submitted on or after the effective
1-21     date of this Act.  An application submitted before the effective
1-22     date of this Act is governed by the law in effect when the
1-23     application was submitted, and the former law is continued in
1-24     effect for that purpose.
