1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the civil service status of fire fighters in certain
 1-3     cities.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 143.003(4), Local Government Code, is
 1-6     amended to read as follows:
 1-7                 (4)  "Fire fighter" means a member of a fire department
 1-8     who was appointed in substantial compliance with this chapter or
 1-9     who is entitled to civil service status under Section 143.005 or
1-10     143.084.  The term includes employees [fire fighters] who perform:
1-11                       (A)  fire suppression;
1-12                       (B)  fire prevention;
1-13                       (C)  fire training;
1-14                       (D)  fire safety education;
1-15                       (E)  fire maintenance;
1-16                       (F)  fire communications;
1-17                       (G)  fire medical emergency technology;
1-18                       (H)  fire photography; [or]
1-19                       (I)  fire administration; or
1-20                       (J)  fire arson investigation.
1-21           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
