 1-7                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-8                                   AN ACT
 1-9     relating to the civil service status of fire fighters in certain
1-10     cities.
1-11           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-12           SECTION 1.  Section 143.003(4), Local Government Code, is
1-13     amended to read as follows:
1-14                 (4)  "Fire fighter" means a member of a fire department
1-15     who was appointed in substantial compliance with this chapter or
1-16     who is entitled to civil service status under Section 143.005 or
1-17     143.084.  The term includes employees [fire fighters] who perform:
1-18                       (A)  fire suppression;
1-19                       (B)  fire prevention;
1-20                       (C)  fire training;
1-21                       (D)  fire safety education;
1-22                       (E)  fire maintenance;
1-23                       (F)  fire communications;
1-24                       (G)  fire medical emergency technology;
1-25                       (H)  fire photography; [or]
1-26                       (I)  fire administration; or
1-27                       (J)  fire arson investigation.
1-28           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
