                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the compensation of certain employees of the Texas
 1-3     Department of Criminal Justice.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by adding
 1-6     Section 493.024 to read as follows:
 1-7           Sec. 493.024.  SALARY INCREASES FOR CERTAIN EMPLOYEES OF THE
 1-8     TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE.  (a)  Employees of the Texas
 1-9     Department of Criminal Justice shall receive an annual percentage
1-10     pay increase if:
1-11                 (1)  the employee is no longer eligible for a
1-12     classification series pay increase based upon length of service,
1-13     and
1-14                 (2)  the employee is eligible for hazardous duty pay
1-15     under Section 659.062, Government Code.
1-16           (b)  An employee shall receive a three percent pay increase
1-17     per year of service that accrues after eligibility under Section
1-18     493.024 is established, for a period of up to ten years, and
1-19           (c)  an employee shall receive a one and one-half percent pay
1-20     increase for every year of service thereafter.
1-21           (d)  The pay increase shall be based upon the current pay
1-22     scale applicable to the employee's current classification series.
 2-1           SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a
 2-2     vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
 2-3     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
 2-4     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
 2-5     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
