No. 1640 1-2 (In the Senate - Received from the House May 1, 2001; 1-3 May 2, 2001, read first time and referred to Committee on 1-4 Education; May 8, 2001, reported favorably by the following vote: 1-5 Yeas 8, Nays 0; May 8, 2001, sent to printer.) 1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-7 AN ACT 1-8 relating to the establishment of a school of pharmacy at Texas A&M 1-9 University--Kingsville. 1-10 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-11 SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 87, Education Code, is 1-12 amended by adding Section 87.303 to read as follows: 1-13 Sec. 87.303. SCHOOL OF PHARMACY. (a) The board of regents 1-14 of The Texas A&M University System may establish and maintain a 1-15 school of pharmacy as a professional school of Texas A&M 1-16 University--Kingsville. 1-17 (b) The board may prescribe courses leading to customary 1-18 degrees offered at other leading American schools of pharmacy and 1-19 may award those degrees. 1-20 SECTION 2. Not later than August 31, 2002, the Texas Higher 1-21 Education Coordinating Board shall prepare an impact statement 1-22 examining the initial implementation of this Act and shall deliver 1-23 a copy of the statement to the board of regents of The Texas A&M 1-24 University System and to the chair of the standing committee of 1-25 each house of the legislature with primary jurisdiction over higher 1-26 education. 1-27 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives 1-28 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as 1-29 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this 1-30 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this 1-31 Act takes effect September 1, 2001. 1-32 * * * * *
