                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to certain election practices and procedures.
 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1.  Chapter 1, Election Code, is amended by adding
 1-5     Section 1.017 to read as follows:
 1-6           Sec. 1.017.  RELATIONSHIP INVOLVING INFORMAL MARRIAGE.  For
 1-7     purposes of this code and any other law of this state relating to
 1-8     the conduct of an election, a relationship involving marriage
 1-9     includes an informal marriage described by Section 2.401, Family
1-10     Code.
1-11           SECTION 2.  Section 13.004, Election Code, is amended to read
1-12     as follows:
1-13           Sec. 13.004.  RECORDING AND DISCLOSURE OF TELEPHONE NUMBER OR
1-14     SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER BY REGISTRAR. (a)  The registrar may not
1-15     transcribe,  copy, or otherwise record a telephone number furnished
1-16     on a registration application.
1-17           (b)  The registrar may transcribe, copy, or otherwise record
1-18     a social security number furnished on a registration application
1-19     only in maintaining the accuracy of the registration records.
1-20           (c)  A telephone number and social security number furnished
1-21     on a registration application are confidential and do not
1-22     constitute public information for purposes of Chapter 552,
1-23     Government Code.  The registrar shall ensure that the telephone
1-24     number and social security number are excluded from disclosure.
 2-1           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
