1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to the amount of the international education fee charged
1-3 at certain institutions of higher education.
1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-5 SECTION 1. Section 54.5132(a), Education Code, is amended to
1-6 read as follows:
1-7 (a) The governing board of an institution of higher
1-8 education, other than The University of Texas at Austin, may charge
1-9 and collect from students registered at the institution a fee in an
1-10 amount not less than [of] $1 and not more than $4 for each semester
1-11 or summer session. The amount of the fee may be increased only if
1-12 the increase is approved by a majority vote of the students at the
1-13 institution participating in an election called for that purpose.
1-14 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only to
1-15 a fee charged for a semester or summer session that begins on or
1-16 after the effective date of this Act.
1-17 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-18 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-19 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
1-20 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-21 Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
