 1-6                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to the amount of the international education fee charged
 1-9     at certain institutions of higher education.
1-10           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-11           SECTION 1. Section 54.5132(a), Education Code, is amended to
1-12     read as follows:
1-13           (a)  The governing board of an institution of higher
1-14     education, other than The University of Texas at Austin, may charge
1-15     and collect from students registered at the institution a fee in an
1-16     amount not less than [of] $1 and not more than $4 for each semester
1-17     or summer session.
1-18           SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only to
1-19     a fee charged for a semester or summer session that begins on or
1-20     after the effective date of this Act.
1-21           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-22     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-23     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-24     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-25     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
