                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to the establishment of high schools for the study of
 1-3     advanced technology by certain school districts.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 29, Education Code, is
 1-6     amended by adding Section 29.187 to read as follows:
 1-7           Sec. 29.187.  ESTABLISHMENT OF SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY IN
 1-8     CERTAIN SCHOOL DISTRICTS. (a)  This section applies only to a
 1-9     school district whose territory:
1-10                 (1)  overlaps more than one other school district; and
1-11                 (2)  is located in more than one county.
1-12           (b)  A school district to which this section applies shall
1-13     establish a high school for the study of advanced technology in a
1-14     municipality with a population of more than 25,000 that has a
1-15     campus of The University of Texas System that has a college of
1-16     science and engineering.  A high school established under this
1-17     section must prepare students for:
1-18                 (1)  employment in a career related to advanced
1-19     technology; and
1-20                 (2)  continued study in a degree program in science,
1-21     engineering, or another field related to advanced technology at an
1-22     institution of higher education.
1-23           (c)  A school district to which this section applies must
1-24     permit students who do not reside in the district to attend a high
 2-1     school established under this section.  The school district in
 2-2     which the student resides shall pay tuition for the student as
 2-3     provided by Section 25.038.
 2-4           (d)  A school district to which this section applies shall
 2-5     issue bonds to permit the district to:
 2-6                 (1)  design and develop a plan to implement a high
 2-7     school for the study of advanced technology in partnership with a
 2-8     campus of The University of Texas System that has a college of
 2-9     science and engineering;
2-10                 (2)  construct and equip the high school; and
2-11                 (3)  purchase a site for the high school that is
2-12     located near a campus of The University of Texas System that has a
2-13     college of science and engineering.
2-14           SECTION 2. Not later than September 1, 2003, a school
2-15     district to which Section 29.187, Education Code, as added by this
2-16     Act, applies shall begin construction of a high school for the
2-17     study of advanced technology as required by that section.
2-18           SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
