                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to a commission to study geriatrics as a requisite for
 1-3     medical school graduation.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 61, Education Code, is
 1-6     amended by adding Section 61.088 to read as follows:
 1-7           Sec. 61.088.  COMMISSION ON GERIATRICS STUDY REQUIREMENT FOR
 1-8     MEDICAL SCHOOL. (a)  In this section, "commission" means the
 1-9     Commission on Geriatrics Study Requirement for Medical School.
1-10           (b)  The commission is an advisory body to the coordinating
1-11     board. The commission is not subject to Chapter 2110, Government
1-12     Code.
1-13           (c)  The president of each institution of higher education
1-14     that operates a medical school shall designate a person to serve on
1-15     the commission as a representative of the medical school.  The
1-16     board may appoint additional members to the commission as the board
1-17     considers appropriate.
1-18           (d)  The commission may adopt rules for the commission's
1-19     procedures.
1-20           (e)  A member of the commission may not receive compensation
1-21     for service on the commission.
1-22           (f)  The commission shall conduct studies and make findings
1-23     and recommendations the commission considers appropriate regarding
1-24     the feasibility or desirability of making the study of geriatrics a
 2-1     requisite for graduation from a medical school in this state.
 2-2           (g)  Not later than October 1, 2002, the commission shall
 2-3     issue a report of the commission's studies, findings, and
 2-4     recommendations and shall deliver a copy of the report to the
 2-5     coordinating board.
 2-6           (h)  The commission is abolished and this section expires
 2-7     January 1, 2003.
 2-8           SECTION 2. (a)  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
 2-9           (b)  The president of each institution of higher education
2-10     that operates a medical school shall designate a representative to
2-11     serve on the Commission on Geriatrics Study Requirement for Medical
2-12     School as required by Section 61.088(c), Education Code, as added
2-13     by this Act, not later than October 1, 2001.
