 1-6                            A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-7                                   AN ACT
 1-8     relating to a commission to study geriatrics as a requisite for
 1-9     medical school graduation.
1-10           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-11           SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 61, Education Code, is
1-12     amended by adding Section 61.088 to read as follows:
1-13           Sec. 61.088.  COMMISSION ON GERIATRICS STUDY REQUIREMENT FOR
1-14     MEDICAL SCHOOL. (a)  In this section, "commission" means the
1-15     Commission on Geriatrics Study Requirement for Medical School.
1-16           (b)  The commission is an advisory body to the coordinating
1-17     board. The commission is not subject to Chapter 2110, Government
1-18     Code.
1-19           (c)  The president of each institution of higher education
1-20     that operates a medical school shall designate a person to serve on
1-21     the commission as a representative of the medical school.  The
1-22     board may appoint additional members to the commission as the board
1-23     considers appropriate.
1-24           (d)  The commission may adopt rules for the commission's
1-25     procedures.
1-26           (e)  A member of the commission may not receive compensation
1-27     for service on the commission.
1-28           (f)  The commission shall conduct studies and make findings
1-29     and recommendations the commission considers appropriate regarding
1-30     the feasibility or desirability of making the study of geriatrics a
1-31     requisite for graduation from a medical school in this state.
1-32           (g)  Not later than October 1, 2002, the commission shall
1-33     issue a report of the commission's studies, findings, and
1-34     recommendations and shall deliver a copy of the report to the
1-35     coordinating board.
1-36           (h)  The commission is abolished and this section expires
1-37     January 1, 2003.
1-38           SECTION 2. (a)  This Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
1-39           (b)  The president of each institution of higher education
1-40     that operates a medical school shall designate a representative to
1-41     serve on the Commission on Geriatrics Study Requirement for Medical
1-42     School as required by Section 61.088(c), Education Code, as added
1-43     by this Act, not later than October 1, 2001.
