                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to requiring hepatitis C training for registered nurses.
 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1. Subchapter G, Chapter 301, Occupations Code, is
 1-5     amended by adding Section 301.304 to read as follows:
 1-6           Sec. 301.304.  HEPATITIS C COMPONENT IN CONTINUING EDUCATION.
 1-7     (a)  As part of any continuing education requirements under Section
 1-8     301.303, a license holder shall participate in not less than two
 1-9     hours of continuing education relating to hepatitis C.  This
1-10     subsection applies only to a license holder who renews a license on
1-11     or after June 1, 2002.
1-12           (b)  The board shall recognize, prepare, or administer a
1-13     hepatitis C training component for use in continuing education for
1-14     license holders under Subsection (a).
1-15           (c)  The training component must provide information relating
1-16     to the prevention, assessment, and treatment of hepatitis C.
1-17           (d)  This section expires June 1, 2004.
1-18           SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only to
1-19     continuing education offered on or after June 1, 2002.
1-20           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-21     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
1-22     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
1-23     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
1-24     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
