                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to requiring hepatitis C training for registered nurses.
 1-3           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-4           SECTION 1. Subchapter G, Chapter 301, Occupations Code, is
 1-5     amended by adding Section 301.304 to read as follows:
 1-6           Sec. 301.304.  HEPATITIS C COMPONENT IN CONTINUING EDUCATION.
 1-7     (a)  As part of any continuing education requirements under Section
 1-8     301.303, a license holder shall participate in not less than two
 1-9     hours of continuing education relating to hepatitis C in a two-year
1-10     licensing period.
1-11           (b)  The board shall recognize, prepare, or administer a
1-12     hepatitis C training component for use in continuing education for
1-13     license holders.
1-14           (c)  The training component  must provide information
1-15     relating to the prevention, assessment, and treatment of hepatitis
1-16     C.
1-17           SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only to
1-18     continuing education offered on or after the effective date of this
1-19     Act.  Continuing education offered before the effective date of
1-20     this Act is governed by the law in effect on the day the continuing
1-21     education was offered, and that law is continued in effect for that
1-22     purpose.
1-23           SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
1-24     a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
 2-1     provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
 2-2     Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
 2-3     Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
