No. 2656 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to a licensed peace officer who is a visiting resource 1-3 officer in a public school. 1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. Chapter 1701, Occupations Code, is amended by 1-6 adding Subchapter M to read as follows: 1-7 SUBCHAPTER M. VISITING RESOURCE OFFICER IN 1-8 PUBLIC SCHOOL 1-9 Sec. 1701.601. DEFINITION. In this subchapter, "school 1-10 resource officer" means a peace officer who is assigned by the 1-11 officer's employing political subdivision to provide: 1-12 (1) a police presence at a public school; 1-13 (2) safety or drug education to students of a public 1-14 school; or 1-15 (3) other similar services. 1-16 Sec. 1701.602. LICENSE REQUIRED. A peace officer who is a 1-17 visiting school resource officer in a public school must be 1-18 licensed as provided by this chapter. 1-19 Sec. 1701.603. FIREARMS ACCIDENT PREVENTION PROGRAM. (a) A 1-20 peace officer who is a visiting school resource officer in a public 1-21 elementary school shall at least once each school year offer to 1-22 provide instruction to students in a firearms accident prevention 1-23 program, as determined by the school district. 1-24 (b) A firearms accident prevention program must include the 2-1 safety message, "Stop! Don't Touch. Leave the Area. Tell an 2-2 Adult.", and may include instructional materials from the National 2-3 Rifle Association Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program, including animated 2-4 videos and activity books. 2-5 SECTION 2. Sections 1701.602 and 1701.603, Occupations Code, 2-6 as added by this Act, apply beginning with the 2001-2002 school 2-7 year. 2-8 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives 2-9 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as 2-10 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this 2-11 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this 2-12 Act takes effect September 1, 2001.
